Diamond stud earrings are one of the few pieces of jewellery that genuinely earn the word classic. A single well-cut stone, set close to the ear — understated, unfussy, and yet entirely capable of elevating whatever you are wearing. They are the piece most people reach for first thing in the morning and the last thing they think about removing.
If you are considering a pair — for yourself or as a gift — here is what is actually worth thinking about.
Why diamond studs work so well
Studs work because they do not compete with anything. They complement a sophisticated evening look without effort, and they make a simple outfit feel considered. Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth, which means they can genuinely be worn daily without concern. A well-made pair, properly cared for, will outlast almost anything else in a jewellery box.
The main stud styles
Solitaire — the definitive choice
One diamond, set on its own. This is the most timeless option, and for good reason: it puts the focus entirely on the stone's quality and brilliance. It pairs effortlessly with almost anything else you choose to wear, which is why it remains the first choice for most people.
Halo studs
A ring of smaller diamonds encircles the centre stone, making it appear larger and adding extra sparkle. A good option if you want more visual presence without significantly increasing the size of the centre stone.
Bezel set
A thin metal rim wraps around the edge of the diamond, securing it completely. Sleek, modern and exceptionally secure — ideal for those who lead an active life or are concerned about catching a prong setting. We particularly like a bezel set stud for people who wear earrings constantly.
Martini set
Three prongs position the diamond very close to the ear, maximising brilliance and giving a clean, low-profile look. The effect is of the diamond sitting almost flush against the lobe.
Choosing the right stone
The same 4Cs that apply to an engagement ring diamond apply here — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat — and the priorities are broadly similar.
Cut matters most. A well-cut diamond fires light outward in every direction, which is exactly what you want in a stud. For maximum sparkle, the round brilliant cut is the natural choice. Princess, oval and cushion cuts are also popular in studs.
Colour — for most settings, G–H colour offers an excellent balance of quality and value. In white metal, anything in this range looks completely white to the naked eye. If you are setting in yellow gold, slightly warmer grades can complement the metal tone beautifully.
Clarity — VS or SI clarity diamonds are ideal for studs. The stones tend to be smaller than engagement ring centre stones, which actually makes inclusions less visible; VS2 or SI1 in a well-cut round stone is almost always eye-clean.
Carat — common choices for everyday studs range from around 0.25ct to 0.50ct per ear for a subtle, elegant look, up to 1.00ct per ear for a bolder statement. The right size depends on personal preference, face shape and how you plan to wear them.
There is one more thing beyond the grades: how a stone reads in person. Shade, transparency and cut quality are things we assess by eye on every stone we source — and for matched pairs, the challenge is finding two stones that are not just individually excellent, but consistent with each other in appearance. That matching is something we take seriously.
Natural or lab-grown diamond studs?
Both are real diamonds. For everyday studs, many clients choose lab-grown diamonds — the savings can be substantial, and they are visually identical to natural stones. If you want to maximise the size or quality of the diamonds within a given budget, lab-grown is often the sensible choice for a piece like this. Natural diamonds are the choice when you want stones that hold their value over time.
We are happy to talk through the options honestly when you come in.
Metal choices
- Platinum — the most hardwearing choice, naturally white and permanent. Does not need re-plating.
- 18ct white gold — beautiful with diamonds, and a popular choice. Rhodium-plated at time of making; may need refreshing over years.
- 18ct yellow gold — warm and classic. Works particularly well with warmer-coloured diamonds or for those who prefer a more traditional look.
- 18ct rose gold — a softer, romantic feel that suits many skin tones.
All settings are hallmarked at the London Assay Office.
Earring backs
The backing matters more than most people realise, especially for daily wear. We recommend screw backs for any pair worn regularly — they are significantly more secure than standard push backs and will not loosen throughout the day. Guardian or butterfly backs are another strong option. We can advise on the right choice for your specific earrings when you come to us.
Caring for your diamond studs
Diamond studs are robust, but they benefit from regular cleaning. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush will keep them sparkling. Bring them to us once a year — we will check the settings, clean them professionally, and let you know if anything needs attention. This takes only a few minutes and makes a real difference to how the diamonds look over time.
